Probiotics in Pig farming – Sustainable solution for better animal health

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for animal health, especially digestive system. We usually think of bacteria as something that causes diseases. But animal’s body is full of bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics are often called ‘good’ or ‘helpful’ bacteria because they keep animal’s gut healthy.

Good bacteria are naturally found in animal’s body. Probiotics can be found in some foods and supplements. Vietnam Institute of Tropical Biology points out that probiotics is a solution to many problems pig farmers are facing, including the increase in food supply and medicine cost, farming environment hygiene issues and polluted environment. The uses of probiotics in daily feeding help increasing pig’s lean rate by over 50% and protecting the pigs from diseases, directly affecting pig quality. And unlike additive medications, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) categorizes probiotics as food, which is safe for most people. Uses of probiotics help greatly in keeping usage of weight gain substance to minimum and ensure food safety to consumers.

While probiotics play an important role in providing a sustainable solution for pig quality in modern pig farming, it is also important for pig farmers to have knowledge about pig’s food supply quality and health in order to be able to choose suitable probiotic products.
