Although there are many limitations, the animal feed industry in Vietnam is gradually improving, typically by applying the technology widely in this area.
Applying technology advances in the animal feed industry
Vietnam’s animal feed market in the past few years has shown had certain improvements despite many challenges. According to the Department of Livestock Production, many technological advances have been applied in the livestock industry, from seed production to environmental treatment.
For the breeding stage, there are about 52.000 high-yielding HF breeding cows imported into the country (accounting for 31% of the total herd) for milk yield from 6.500-7.600 kg / cycle, significantly increasing productivity of dairy cows. In addition, the application of gender-sensitive cow breeding technology at Moc Chau Dairy Cow Joint Stock Company, TH True Milk, Da Lat Milk Joint Stock Company …, has been initially successful to bring high economic efficiency, with the rate of female calves born at 87-92%. The 4-level pig production system is also developed quite rapidly with about five 4-level pig production chains with a scale of 0.5-2 million meat pigs / chain.
Meanwhile, the management technology of livestock breeds through software has helped manage and evaluate the estimated breeding value and allowed selection and mating of individuals in the herd to have the highest value (pressure used with cattle and pigs) … For poultry breeds, there are good breeds of chickens in the world such as AA, ISA, Ross, Avian, Lohmann, Cobb, etc., which are available in Vietnam.
In the field of animal feed production, the modern industrial food processing technologies in the world have been imported and applied in Vietnam, especially the technology of producing liquid food used in farms. Large-scale and closed husbandry from mixing raw materials and distributing food to each barn helps to increase digestibility, reduces feed costs and increases breeding efficiency. In terms of environmental treatment, treatment technologies through large-scale biogas systems, biological padding, black fly larvae technology and earthworm technology haave been widely applied in production.
Towards improving productivity and expanding scale
According to the Department of Livestock statistics, during the past 10 years (2008-2018), the livestock sector has made remarkable progress. Specifically, if the total herd of pigs increase by only 2.4%, the slaughter output will increase by 33.5%; the output of poultry slaughtering increases to 134.3%, 2.4 times over the increase of the total herd (up 55.5%); total cow herd decreases by 14.7%, but the output of slaughtering increases by 43.4% …
The increase in output is higher due to the productivity increase of 15-20% in each pet object and the conversion of 30% of breeding facilities to industrial and professional methods (creating over 55% of meat, eggs, and milk production respectively).
In terms of seed production, thanks to the advanced method of genetic evaluation in breeding selection, the reproductive productivity in CP Vietnam system in 2000 was 21 pigs/sow/year, now increased to 26 pigs/sow/year. At the same time, the application of new technology in barn design and environmental treatment has contributed significantly in expanding the scale of each farm. Thus, if in 2000, each farm of C.P Vietnam had 240 sows, by 2018 it is 2.400 sows. In 2000, each farm had an average of 250 pigs, now up to 12,000 porkers.
