Export prospects for livestock products in 2019
Although the export turnover of livestock products is still limited, numerous experts have shown that in 2019 and the up coming time, the export of livestock products will be strongly improved, contributing to the development of Vietnam’s animal feed industry in common.
USD 500 – 550 million of livestock products exported in 2018
This is an estimate from the Department of Livestock Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development – MARD). Particularly, the exported animal feed products include frozen pork, salted duck eggs, honey, milk and dairy products. In addition, about USD 400 – 450 million of raw materials and animal feed products are exported.
In terms of imports, Vietnam imported nearly USD 500 million of animal feed products including breeding pigs, poultry breeds, meat of all kinds, live cattle and nearly 18 million tons of animal feed materials.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Duong, Director of the Department of Livestock Production, said about the potential of exporting animal feed products: “Vietnam has clean and safe quality products for Vietnamese consumers to keep the domestic market. In addition, Vietnamese animal feed industry is targed to the export market. Organization of livestock production in the chain of links is to retrieve the origin to ensure food hygiene and safety, ensuring the profit sharing of those involved in the production, husbandry, slaughtering and processing process. This also helps the Vietnamese livestock industry avoid the situation of not establishing the pork industry or the food industry that has enough competitive power in the context of integration.”
Mr. Duong also stated that Vietnam is the most advantageous in the area of pork products, especially milk pigs and piglets.
Currently, the Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development have set a solution to find export markets for pork in particular and animal feed products in general. At the end of December 2008, the MNS Meat Processing Complex of Ha Nam Meat Complex was inaugurated to improve the production process with European technology.
Approach to other markets of Vietnamese livestock products
Currently, Vietnam is approaching to neighboring markets as well as more developed countries. Mr. Yang said, “We have exported frozen meat. In the upcoming time, Vietnam needs to pay more attention to deep processing and promote processing and cooking meat. Produced in conditions that are not completely clean but good processing can still be exported. In addition, the most difficult problem needed to overcome is still to control the disease so that fresh meat can be exporteds.”
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Cuong, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development said that MARD is cooperating with Ministry of Industry and Trade to discuss with the Chinese side to ensure the standard conditions as well as the procedures to export main export pork to China. Besides, he said: “Currently in Europe and North America, pork prices are much lower than Vietnam. Therefore, we must pay attention to both market development and production chain issues to ensure not only clean production but also competitive prices. With this momentum, it is believed that, step by step Vietnam can make Vietnam’s livestock production continue to grow and participate deeply in the global agricultural chain ”.
