Consumers are returning to buy pork after being wary of African swine fever virus. Prices of pork is increasing slightly.
Surveys in retail markets in Ho Chi Minh City such as Thai Binh, Thi Nghe, Ba Chieu, Hoa Binh … show that retail pork price is quite high: thigh meat still at 80.000 vnd, pork belly 100.000 vnd, young ribs 130.000 vnd/ kg. In supermarkets, many types of pork are selling at market stabilization prices but still higher than market prices of 10.000-20.000 vnd/ kg. Specifically, thigh meat is 100.000 vnd, shoulder meat 95.000 nvd, pork belly 122.000 vnd, lean meat 112.000 vnd/kg.
Chicken prices in retail markets also increased slightly to several thousand vnd/kg. Industrial chicken is 45.000 – 47.000 vnd, chicken is 110.000 – 120.000 vnd/kg. Ms. Hien, a chicken trader at Thi Nghe market (Binh Thanh district, Ho Chi Minh City), said that some people are afraid of African swine, so they do not buy pork, switch to eating chicken, so chicken consumption has increased by about 5% -10 %. According to traders, the plentiful supply of chicken is falling in the summer months so consumption is not high. Therefore, the price of industrial chicken at farms is stable at 28.000 – 30.000 vnd/kg.
Beef consumption also increased slightly, ranging from 220.000 to 240.000 vnd/kg. Many small businesses said that when information about African swine was published, many people switched to eating fish, chicken, beef and seafood instead of pork. However, for a few days, people have come back to buy pork since this consumption habit is so common.
At Hoc Mon wholesale market from the beginning of July until now, it shows that the quantity of pigs coming to the market is still high, ranging from 4.932 – 5.899. On July 13, the price of pork at wholesale market increased by 3.000 – 5.000 vnd/kg (depending on type). According to Mr. Le Van Tien, Deputy Director of Hoc Mon wholesale market management company, compared to the beginning of the month, in general, the price of pork has inched up but compared to the normal market conditions, there is no epidemic, the price still remains low.
One owner of a large food processing facility in Binh Duong, said that after a while the consumers were psychologically afraid of pork because of worrying about African cholera, now they are calm since the disease does not spread through humans. “Pork accounts for over 70% of meat consumption of Vietnamese consumers, so it is not easy to change habits. A few months ago, consumers even feared pork sausage, transferred to chicken and beef sausage, now they turn back to normal. In addition, the price of imported pork has also pushed the market price, mainly due to the increase of Chinese buying to compensate for the shortage of domestic livestock. Compared with the beginning of 2019, the prices of most commodities increased, particularly lard nearly doubled, from 20.000 – 22.000 vnd/kg to 40.000 vnd/kg” – the owner said.
